BYOkids Review – Hamilton Island

Monday, October 11th, 2010

By Leah Squire BYOkids

We recently took our family holiday on Hamilton Island and it completely surpassed my expectations.  Firstly it was all so easy, with Hamilton Island having its own airport with direct flights from major cities there is no waiting around with the kids.  One flight then straight off onto a shuttle and within 5 mins you are at your accommodation. How easy is that!

We stayed in a 1 brm Whitsunday Holiday Apartments perfectly located opposite beautiful Catseye Beach.  Down on the beach plenty of activities were on offer such as kayaking, snorkelling, beach volleyball etc.  We spent plenty of time lounging around the pool, cocktail in hand.  The kids headed off each day to activities at the sports and recreation centre taking part in kids squash comps, table tennis, bingo, mini golf and we all enjoyed the buggy rally.

Being fine food lovers one of the highlights for us was the fantastic choice of restaurants, cafes, bars etc.  Kids under 12 eat free in a a range of restaurants and their meals were superb as were ours.  The apartments are self contained but with the kids eat free offer we were eating out for less than it costs for the four of us to eat out at home and the food was truly spectacular hence our kitchen remained spotlessly unused for the duration of our stay.

There is no way you can get bored on Hamilton island with a busy sports team running activities all day. Plus an aquatic driving range, wire flyer, loads of day tours, bars, shops, a koala and crocodile park, walking trails, pools and heaps more. Free shuttles can get you anywhere you need to go picking up in numerous locations and run continuosly all day otherwise hire a golf buggy and have some fun.

The kids club offers a safe secure environment with a really enthusiastic fun team for kids from 6 weeks of age.  They offer separate sections depending on the kids ages with age suitable games and activities.  Our kids were too busy to go to kids club but I wouldnt have hesitated to enrol them for a day or two if we wanted a special day out.  The kids club was spotlessly clean and all the kids were having a great time. Kids club is an additional charge but costs are reasonable.  The kids club also offers a toy library where you can hire a selection of beach toys, lego, games etc daily or by the week.

There are loads of accommodation choices and they cater well for small or large families with everything ranging from hotel rooms to houses available.

Our must do recommendations: breakfast at Toucan Tango’s (the pancakes are to die for) family dinner at the steakhouse, romantic dinner for two at the Italian restaurant, get the whole family involved in beach volleyball, take the golf buggy rally challenge, wander around the marina whilst enjoying fish and chips and last but not least find a lounge on the beach or by the pool and claim it!
